Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, we built castles with solid walls and a single entrance to protect our assets. We originally built IT systems like this, and for on-premises Active Directory, we created walls through a combination of our building, network and domain/forest boundaries. As with the castle, once inside the perimeter, trust was assumed.

Today we need to allow our users to work from home and reach out to partner organisations and cloud SaaS providers. Our containing perimeter is gone, and we need to adopt a new stance as actors move around our systems and access resources. Never trust; always verify. This is the cornerstone of Zero Trust.
